One of the most significant recent additions to the application, which is now generally referred to as the Snipping Tool in Windows 11 (a merger and evolution of the older Snipping Tool and Snip & Sketch), is native screen recording. This feature transforms the simple screenshot utility into a full-fledged screen capture tool.
🎙️ Capturing Video and Audio
Users can now select a specific area of their screen and record it as a video clip. Crucially, this feature also includes options to record audio—from both the microphone and the computer's output. This makes the tool ideal for quickly creating tutorials, capturing steps to reproduce a bug, or recording any on-screen activity without needing third-party software. Once recorded, the video snip can be saved directly or opened in an editor like Clipchamp for further refinement.
📝 AI-Powered Text Actions and Visual Search
Microsoft has integrated smart features to enhance productivity post-capture. These enhancements leverage AI to analyze the image content, making the tool much more than just an image editor.
✨ Extracting and Redacting Text
The Text Actions feature uses Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to automatically detect and extract text from your screenshot. You can then easily copy this text to the clipboard. Furthermore, it often includes a Redact option, allowing you to quickly censor sensitive information, like email addresses or phone numbers, directly within the snip before sharing. Additionally, newer versions are gaining a Visual Search with Bing capability, letting you right-click a snip to search the internet for the content of the image.
✏️ Enhanced Markup and Editing Tools
The core editing functionality has also received a major upgrade, improving the precision and ease of annotation.
The most notable recent addition to the drawing experience is Draw & Hold. This smart inking feature lets you draw a rough shape (like a line, circle, or rectangle) with the pen tool, and by briefly holding the mouse or pen still before releasing, the app automatically snaps the rough stroke into a perfect, clean shape. This refinement makes annotations look professional instantly, saving time on manual adjustments.
